Tulsa's Dfest Thrills in the Blue Dome District

Hush Hush Commotion   The Oh Johnny Girls

The Effects

Music lovers from across the country packed into downtown Tulsa on Friday, July 25th, to catch the first night of Dfest and the headlining acts. Spanning over 20 genres of music, the two-day festival proved to be a great opportunity for emerging artists to showcase their talent.

Artists and fans also enjoyed a bevy of educational panels during this year’s music conference. Each panel was designed to educate working musicians and impart invaluable information to artists in any stage of their career. Panelists spanning from all over the country covered a comprehensive list of topics, along with special instructional music clinics and workshops.

Dfest, which ran through Saturday, July 26th, featured approximately 150 bands on 11 outdoor and indoor stages scattered over several downtown city blocks in the Blue Dome District. Some of the diverse musical artists at this year’s festival included such nationally known performers as The All-American Rejects, The Roots, Zappa Plays Zappa, Clutch, Paramore, and Ghostland Observatory. In addition, Oklahoma bands of every genre made up over half of the festival’s roster, with El Paso Hot Button, Hush Hush Commotion, The Effects, Callupsie, PDA, and many more.

Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute

In June, sixteen Oklahoma high school students from across the state gathered at Quartz Mountain to study film at the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute. Throughout the course of this two-week program, students pooled together their diverse backgrounds and skills to create and screen three original films under the instruction of award-winning film instructors Sterlin Harjo and Nathan Young.

OSAI is a two-week residential academy for Oklahoma high school students, interested in literary, visual, and performing arts, taught by nationally renowned award-winning artists. Film and video students learn elements of film language, film appreciation, and screenwriting for documentary, fiction television, and theatrical film release. Students also shoot and edit a short film based on a pre-selected script, which is screened in a public exhibition.

Based on the success of this summer’s turnout, The Oklahoma Arts Institute is currently accepting applications for the Film and Video discipline of their 2009 Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain. Applicants are selected through competitive statewide auditions. Up to sixteen students are accepted, in each discipline and every accepted student automatically receives a full scholarship to the program, worth over $2,000. Auditions begin in January at various locations around the state.

Records that Rock

Entertainment Weekly has released its list of the top 100 albums of the last 25 years. Oklahoma City’s own The Flaming Lips landed at the 23rd for their 1999 album “The Soft Bulletin”.

This disc is considered by many to mark a change in course for the band. With more traditional, catchy melodies and accessible-sounding music and lyrics that are more serious and thoughtful in content, “The Soft Bulletin” has been called a mid-career breakout for The Flaming Lips. The album was noted for its fusion of ordinary rock instruments, electronic beats and synthesizers. Its large layered, symphonic sound has also earned it a reputation as the “Pet Sounds” of the 1990’s.

Tribeca Film Institute Launches 'Reframe' Project

The Tribeca Film Institute has announced the launch of Reframe, an innovative project designed to help individual filmmakers, broadcasters, distributors, public media organizations, archives, libraries, and other media owners digitize, market, and sell their classic and hard-to-find films and video content using the Internet. Created in partnership with Amazon's CreateSpace, the project has received grants totaling $1 million from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation as well as additional funding from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York State Council on the Arts. The project aims to convert film and video content into high-quality digital files, with video works converted for free and film formats digitized at cost. After a work has been digitized, the project will return a digital copy to the rights holder and, through a unique nonexclusive arrangement, will allow additional copies to be sold to the public through Amazon and Reframe at prices set by the rights holder.

In addition, the Reframe Web site is designed to become a community hub that will aggregate content from independent and alternative media and make it searchable in new ways. As more works become digitized and video proliferates on the Internet, Reframe is expected to become a trusted guide to quality content, allowing visitors to find the best content through a combination of expert and user-generated curation, specialized search functionality, and the best social networking tools.
